In an effort to strengthen and develop the human capacity of young Liberians, the People’s Republic of China, through its Embassy near Monrovia, and the government of Liberia over the weekend held a pre-departure ceremony for recipients of the 2022-2023 Chinese government scholarships.
The Chinese government scholarship is expected to be awarded to 190 students but at the ceremony our reporter observed the presence of twelve recipants of the scholarships all of whom are employees of the government of Liberia working at various ministries.
The beneficiaries in appreciation of the opportunity given them, presented a certificate to the Chinese government through its Ambassador as a means of expressing gratitude. The certificate was presented to the Minister of Education who then presented it to the Ambassador.
The pre-departure event was held in the conference room of the Chinese embassy in the suburbs of Congo Town, aimed at motivating the students to be law abiding and remain focus on their studies through share of past scholarship recipants who returned and other national educational academicians.
The program brought together beneficiaries of the Chinese government scholarships, Minister of Education, University of Liberia President and other key dignitaries who joined the ceremony via zoom.
Remarking at the ceremony and motivating the students, Chinese Ambassador to Liberia H.E. Ren Yisheng described the program as People-to-People exchanges as an important means of deepening the understanding and friendship between the two peoples (China, Liberia).
He wished all the new students a safe journey to China, every success in their studies and an important role to play in the national development of Liberia in the future.
‘I’m pleased to inform you that, for the 2020-2023 period, the Chinese government will provide altogether 190 full scholarships to Liberian elites, many of whom are leaving for China soon’’ he noted.
He pointed out that in recent years, the Chinese government on average provides about 50 full scholarships to the Liberian government every year and around 200 short- and long-term training opportunities, some of which also include master and doctorate degrees.
According to him, graduated Liberian students and trainees from the Chinese government scholarships and training programs are playing increasingly important roles in their home country.
The Chine’s Ambassador disclosed that their embassy also provides the Ambassador’s scholarships to more than 100 students of excellence from University of Liberia, Tubman University and Cuttington University every year, which has helped the fostering of talents of Liberia.
Mr. Ren said that China and Liberia are good friends and good brothers, adding that the Chinese people and relevant universities warmly welcome Liberian students to China for study and stay.
“I hope that the students will make the best use of the opportunity to study in China, work hard on the Chinese language and professional knowledge, gain in-depth understanding of the Chinese culture, and experience the historic development and achievements China has made’’ he motivated them further.
‘’May you all return home well trained to serve the country and the people, and become the builder of Liberia’s development. At the same time, you are cultural envoys of Liberia. You are expected to make due contribution to enhancing the China-Liberia friendship and win-win cooperation. I am convinced that this experience will be enjoyable and unforgettable memory in your life’’ he concluded.
Also remarking, Minister prof. D. Ansu Sonii Ministry of Education and Hon. Yaba Thompson, Assistant Minister for International Organizations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, expressed thanked and appreciation to the Chinese government for granting those young Liberians the opportunity to foster their studies.
